Didn’t buy from Amazon, but Zones. Purchased eight of these for a small doctor office. They were to be used oriented 90 degrees clockwise for better viewing of long x-ray images. Big mistake. The narrow viewing angle is much worse in the vertical position and they were deemed unusable. Even in the normal screen position there is a noticeable difference top to bottom. At least there is a 3 year exchange.
The negative points expressed about this (and other Dell) monitors may be valid, however my experience with several of them is that for most normal purposes it does a fine job. Where it really excels is if it breaks. I had one die, called and talked to the adequate non-american tech support who finally did determine that yes it was dead. That was at 3 PM. At 11 AM then NEXT morning a new one arrived at my doorstep. The box included a prepaid mailer to return the bad one. Total cost to me zero. By comparison I had a Hannsg monitor fail, it took them 10 days for them to get me an RMA number, I had to pay to ship it to California, and it took another two weeks to get back to me. I know, LCD monitors seldom fail, but I’ve had two recent failures(in different locations, and yes, with surge protection)and Dell certainly was the clear winner in the repairdepartment.
I’m also going to have to disagree with Mr Rehs here. Even though the Dell 2208WFP isn’t a terrible monitor, it’s really not great either.
As some of you may know, nearly all 22″ TFT monitors are TN panels. This is the cheapest type of panel, and the limitations are quite apparent at 22″ and up. The main problem with this product is the viewing angle, which is atrocious. You have to look at it dead centre. Any angling up, down or to the side will see a change in colouration, normally showing a slight pink/red colour at the edges of the screen. It wasn’t particularly sharp [in spite of the 'Ultrasharp' tag] and the colours could have looked fresher. Calibration was also a real pain and I struggled for days to get it to look good, eventually giving up.
This would be fine as a secondary monitor or for a cheap and cheerful option….but if you want high quality, great colours and sharpness look elsewhere.
It seems that Mr. W.Rehs’s review refers to a quite different monitor than mine.
In my opinion this is a non compliant monitor which never should have sold, even less under “Ultrasharp” denomination.
Monitor is impossible to manage. Hue goes from green to pink. Black is never black and text always have a coloured or white “halo”. You can struggle as much as you can trying to get a decent setup. Forget it: you’ll never succeed.
Brigtness is uneven all across the screen, showing different patches, and luminosity is consistently higher in the inferior third (or half) than in the superior part.
And this is not my unit. If you want more opinions please have a look at Dell’s forums.
I have had very different monitors, both CRTs and LCDs and I have liked them more or less, but never felt hate for them. This is my feeling with this one. I will send it back tomorrow.
I am totally satisfied with the purchase of this product. Having done alot of research looking for the 22″ widescreen LCD monitor that would both suit my needs and price range I am happy to report this one exceeded my expectations.
Installation was literally a snap. Mounting the LCD on the stand is a very simple process. You have the ability to adjust height up and down and tilt along with being able to swivel side to side. The stand is sturdy and well built. It comes with the needed cables to use either a VGA or DVI-I connection to your Video card. I am presently using a EVGA 7600 GS 512MB that has either connection available and I elected the DVI which offers better performance due to no digital to analog conversion requirement. Upon installation, WIN XP Pro only recognized a Standard monitor present so the driver disc provided by DELL was required, once the drivers were installed the DELL 2208WFP was properly recognized by the OS. The monitor provides 4 USB 2.0 ports 2 on the side and 2 on the back, of course you utilize one of your computer ports to connect the monitors USB capabilitiies so your net gain is 3. I hooked up a webcam to one of the rear ports and it worked fine. I am using the native resolution for this monitor of 1680×1050. The video is awesome right out of the box, I found that myself personally I needed to make no video adjustments whatsoever. The picture is bright and vibrant. Text is sharp and clear. I am totally satisfied with this product, if there are any cons it would have nothing to do with monitor itself for it handles video superbly, but documentation provided is sparse, which is pretty much the trend these days, if you want to know more about the product or need help you’ll basically need to go online for it, but anyone with basic knowledge should have no problem at all with the initial setup. This is a great monitor and well worth the money spent. I highly recommend it to anyone.
Please note: This monitor only has VGA and DVI input jacks, there is no Svideo, composite or component, so if you are hoping to use it as a TV monitor as well your most likely out of luck unless your Audio/Video receiver or cable box provides the necessary outputs which is unlikely.
